Background of the Study

The rise of fintech has revolutionized the financial industry, providing innovative solutions for payments, investments, and financial management. These solutions are delivered through mobile and web applications, each with distinct architectures, user experiences, and security challenges (Danladi & Abubakar, 2024). Mobile applications, designed for smartphones and tablets, are often praised for their convenience and user-friendly interfaces. Web applications, accessible through browsers, offer compatibility across devices without requiring installation.

However, both platforms are susceptible to security vulnerabilities that could compromise user data, financial transactions, and system integrity. Mobile applications face risks such as malware, insecure APIs, and unauthorized access due to device loss. Web applications, on the other hand, are prone to cross-site scripting (XSS), SQL injection, and other server-side attacks (Adeyemi et al., 2023).

For fintech firms in Taraba State, where the adoption of digital financial services is growing, understanding these vulnerabilities is essential. A comparative analysis will help identify the most critical threats and recommend effective mitigation strategies.

Statement of the Problem

As fintech firms increasingly rely on digital platforms, security breaches have become a major concern, potentially leading to financial losses, reputational damage, and customer distrust. While mobile applications are more accessible to users, they often lack robust security measures, making them vulnerable to malware and other threats. Web applications, despite their advanced security features, remain targets for sophisticated cyberattacks (Bashir & Ibrahim, 2024).

The lack of a comprehensive analysis comparing the security vulnerabilities of mobile and web applications in the specific context of fintech firms in Taraba State creates a knowledge gap. Addressing this gap is crucial for developing secure and reliable financial platforms.

Objectives of the Study

1. To compare the security vulnerabilities of mobile and web applications used by fintech firms in Taraba State.

2. To identify the most critical security threats affecting mobile and web applications.

3. To recommend effective strategies for mitigating security vulnerabilities in mobile and web applications.

Research Questions

1. What are the key security vulnerabilities of mobile and web applications used by fintech firms in Taraba State?

2. How do these vulnerabilities differ between mobile and web applications?

3. What strategies can fintech firms adopt to mitigate security vulnerabilities in their applications?

Research Hypotheses

1. There is no significant difference in security vulnerabilities between mobile and web applications used by fintech firms in Taraba State.

2. The severity of security threats differs significantly between mobile and web applications.

3. Effective mitigation strategies significantly reduce security vulnerabilities in mobile and web applications.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on fintech firms operating in Taraba State, analyzing their mobile and web applications. Limitations may include restricted access to proprietary application data and rapidly evolving cybersecurity threats that could affect the findings.

Definitions of Terms

• Mobile Applications: Software designed to run on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.

• Web Applications: Software accessed through a web browser on internet-enabled devices.

• Security Vulnerabilities: Weaknesses in software or systems that can be exploited by attackers.
